Chapter 10

Flying Books

Still thinking about Ellie and that guy she's with, I descend the stairs, avoiding students coming up. I have no idea what to do for her but have a feeling she's here for something that has nothing to do with angels. My best guess is that Fileze got her into the Academy.

When I reach the main floor, I stop and shove away thoughts of Ellie. She's a big girl and will hopefully be okay. The library is on this level, somewhere. I know that much because I overheard a student talking about it in Angel Sciences. The assignment I chose to research and write about is on the Fall. I'm to create a hypothesis, presenting two points for and two against why it's wrong that angels were cast down to Earth.

In my opinion—not that anyone cares—but I don't think the why of the fall matters. Angels fell. Get over it already and move on with your lives. People are starving outside the wall. Why not use their angelic influences for good? But it seems if an angel leaves Fallen City, it's only for their gain. Whether it's to become an actress, make a bunch of money in the stock market, or whatever else they feel like pursuing.

Wasteful and arrogant. That's all angels are. Except I'm one now too. But I refuse to be arrogant or wasteful. I want to make a difference.

Which leads my thoughts back to Ellie. Why is she here? The guy she's with, Levi, is an angel but also a vampire. No question about that. I've never seen a hybrid like him up close. Does he work for Fileze too? He said his last name was Kross, and I know Zayn Kross is the leader of the vampires in the Halo.

What the hell has Ellie gotten herself into? I need to find out.

After circling the lobby once, I'm more confused about which way to go than ever. The kid Odette called a rat is coming my direction, his eyes focused on a point over my head. I step in front of him.

"Hey, you're in my Flying 101 class," I say, giving him what I hope is a bright smile.

He makes a face, one that looks like he tasted something terrible. "There should be separate classes for angels with and without wings. Learning shouldn't be humiliating." His throaty voice doesn't fit his slight frame and short stature. "I lodged my complaint with the Dean's office, but his secretary seemed incompetent. My written concerns were probably thrown in the trash the second I walked out." He crosses his arms in apparent frustration.

"Good idea telling the Dean how you feel. I completely agree about the separate classes," I encourage. "Um, what's your name?"

He snorts, his features twisting in scorn. "Of course, you do. You Terras are all the same. Nothing but snobby wannabes." He rolls his eyes and steps around me.

I have no clue what he's talking about. "Wait, what's a Terra? And that isn't true," I say, even though it might be.
